It's that time of year again! Time to start looking at where to go for your next family Easter escape. The Victorian High Country has what you're looking for; Mount Beauty, Bright and surrounds has been a long loved spot for the annual Easter getaway, especially while it is still warm enough to enjoy taking a dip in the Kiewa River. But Easter has been known to get a little chaotic in this little town we like to call home, so we have asked some of our staff their favourite things to do to escape the crowds when things get a little hectic around town.
Journey into the remote wilderness of the Alpine National Park on home bred mountain horses, settling into a bush camp after the days ride with a small group around the campfire. A chance to connect with nature, your horse, the people, and the universe we share!
Falls Creek is still open my friends, and with that inconvenient landslide comes the knowing that it is a slice of quiet paradise up there at the moment! Take the back roads over Mount Hotham, through the sleepy town of Omeo, a historic gold mining town, before heading up to Falls Creek via Anglers Rest. Now that you have arrived, explore the many walking trails and lookouts without having to push your way to the front of the viewing deck! We recommend the leisurely walk to Roper’s Lookout, where you walk through regenerating fire-damaged snowgums beyond the dam wall to a lookout with incredible views of Falls Creek.
For a longer walk, take the Wallace’s Heritage Trail and experience a piece of Bogong High Plains’ history by visiting Cope and Wallace’s Hut – the oldest cattleman’s hut in the National Park (circa 1889).
The Mitta Pub (formerly the Laurel Hotel) is one of the North East’s true iconic watering holes. They provide a destination that is great for families as well as couples and friends groups. Warm and cosy open fires for those cooler nights, an extensive wine list and hearty meals keep the atmosphere inviting and provide a comforting stop. They have just refurbished their dining room which overlooks Snowy Creek, and provides the perfect spot for enjoying a warm autumn evening with a few cold beers. Set in bush surrounds, backing on to Paddy’s Reserve and the beautiful Snowy Creek, the Mitta Pub offers a relaxing meal and a drink to everyone visiting the Mitta Valley.
Mount Granya State Park is a dominant feature in the Upper Murray landscape. Its steep, forested slopes rise dramatically above Lake Hume and surrounding valleys to form prominent ridges and plateaus. The park has diverse vegetation and spectacular wildflowers.
Take a picnic and have lunch at the summit of Mount Granya. The Grade 3 wilderness walk is 10.4 kilometres return and begins in the Cotton Tree Campground, Granya. The site of an old dairy, it has a gravel parking area, large flat grassed area for camping, campfire pits and a long drop toilet. The track begins as a 4WD track leading up the hill towards the Scout Hut, an aptly named log hut constructed for the Granya Scout Group in 1937. The track then continues on to Granya Falls, which following rain are quite spectacular. From there, the path continues through open forest to the summit of Mount Granya. Once at the summit, you can extend your walk by completing the Lyrebird Loop Nature Trail. This short walk (400m return) wanders around the summit of Mount Granya where lyrebirds are typically seen and heard
Experience riding the beautiful tracks of the Alpine National Park through tall mountain forests, fern gullies and river crossings. Boasting the use of tracks otherwise inaccessible to 4wd and motorbike riding, it's rare we even see another person in the National Park! Taking only 10 guests or less at a time, this is a really great way to peacefully take in the landscape of the beautiful Alpine area. Half day and full day rides provide plenty of opportunities for long canters amongst the forestry, while 2hr afternoon rides are more suited to beginner rides, nervous riders and young children. Experienced and qualified guides will provide you with a riding and safety demo prior to leaving the farm, and will ensure that your trip is fun and memorable!
